How To Write Your Review

Writing your review should ideally start with you taking notes, during actual gameplay. If that's not your style, that's alright, but notes can be a great asset for long games, when crucial information may be forgotten.

For starters, make sure you write your review in one of the following.

Notepad, Windows Wordpad, or any suitable alternative on Linux, Windows, or other operating systems that will let you save in plain text.

Screenshots are crucial to reviews, as they provide a visual tie-in to what you are writing about, and may be the deciding factor in whether or not someone decides to try a game. Follow these rules closely so that there are no problems, and you don't end up having to take your shots all over again.

All screenshots must be submitted in the native resolution of the game console you are emulating. Most emulators will let you make your screen as big as you like, without affecting screenshots, however there are a few out there that will dump pictures as big as your game window. Take a test shot first, to make sure you get the right size image!

All screenshots must not contain any sort of filtering. Sometimes emulators will let filters through, just like they will sometimes take bigger pictures than they are supposed to. Take a test screenshot first to make sure nothing gets through and your image is clean! No scanlines, no 2xSai or other enhancements, no blurring, no FPS counters - nothing must be present in the screenshot or it will be automatically rejected!

The following formats are the only accepted formats. PNG is strongly prefered, but we realize this is not always possible.

PNG
BMP
GIF

NO JPEGS! Jpegs are compressed and look like trash when zoomed in, they also make modifying images more difficult if resizing work is needed.

Finally, we move on to how to submit your work. ZIP, RAR, or 7zip your text file and images into a signle file, and send them to the address on our Contact page. Do not send multiple ZIP, RAR, or 7zip files unless you are submitting a lot of screenshots and you have a slow connection. DO NOT submit Microsoft Word formatted files or other similar files, especially such files with images embedded in them. Your review will be rejected and you will be told to re-submit your review properly.

All of our writers and casual submissions are given proper credit. You will have your e-mail listed on our contributing authors page, if you request us to do this. If you are interested in becoming a full time staff member, writing for every issue, then let us know! The only requirement is that you submit exceptional, professional work, and that you contribute at least 2 reviews to every issue (roughly 2 reviews every 3 months).

Last but not least. Currently Old Skool Games covers North American USA games ONLY. Do not submit games from another country or region. Unless you are specifically interested in contributing to & maintaining an Imported Games section on a regular basis, your foreign game reviews will be rejected. If you are interested in starting (or joining) an Imported Games section, emails us from the contacts page and let us know.
